About Romania

Romania is in the heart of Eastern Europe bordered by Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and the Black Sea.

With a land size slightly smaller than the state of Oregon and a population of over 22 million people, Romania boasts a rich history dating back to the beginning of Europe.

In the 1940's Romania struggled to find their identity; In 1941 they entered WWII on the side of the Axis. Three years later, under King Michael I they joined the Allies.

However, in 1947 communism forced King Michael I out and Nicolae Ceausescu gained control. Romania was under communist rule from 1947 until 1989. During this time Romania's resources were drained and the people were oppressed and had very limited freedoms. In 1989 the Romanian Revolution occurred and resulted in over 1,000 deaths and the fall of Ceausescu. Romania is now free from communism; they joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.

The struggle for identity still exists, and though the future is promising, many mindsets are still stuck in the past. Modernization has started to develop but life is still lived at a slower pace.

Reghin is the city that we will be living in and working in and around. The population is about 40,000 or so, give or take. Reghin is a smaller city (no malls, no movie theater, 3 grocery stores, ect.) but it has a lot of character. Here you will see a modern vehicles driving, as well as bikers and horse and buggies. There is quite a large Roma (Gypsy) population in and around the city that we'll be serving. The Roma people group is the poorest people among all of Europe and one of the most hated.
